엘로퀀스 매거진 아티스트 시리즈(Eloquence Magazine Artist Series)
이번 <아티스트 시리즈>의 세 번째 전시는 사진전문잡지인 이안매거진과 함께 큐레이팅한 백승우 사진작가의 작품과 함께한다.
엘로퀀스 매거진 출간이래 시작한 이래 지금까지 국내외 아티스트를 끊임없이 소개해왔다. 지난 3년간 매거진을 발행해오면서 엘로퀀스는 성장했고 이제 크리에이티브 분야에서 활발한 행보를 보이고 있다. ‘아티스트 시리즈(Artist Series)’ 행사를 통해 엘로퀀스가 선별한 아티스트의 멋진 작품들을 소개하고자 한다. 2014년 겨울, 한국의 젊고 감각적인 포토그래퍼 하시시 박의 전시로 <아티스트 시리즈 1>의 시작을 알린 엘로퀀스는 5월 초 <아티스트 시리즈 2>의 그 두번째 전시로 <퍼플매거진>의 편집장 올리비에 잠(Olivier Zahm)의 전시를 선보인바 있다.
엘로퀀스 아티스트 시리즈 3: 백승우 개인전
이번 전시는 백승우 작가의LP Jacket Edition을 처음으로 공개하는 자리이다.
LP Jacket Edition은 이름 그대로 LP 레코드 음반 형태에 작가의 서명이 들어간 작품 1점이 포함된 한정판 에디션이다.
일반인들에게는 어렵게만 느껴지는 예술 작품 수집을 LP Jacket이라는 이색적인 방식을 통해 대중적으로 더 많은 사람들이 작가의 작품 세계를 공유할 수 있도록 기획했다. 또한 작품이란 벽에 전시되는 것이라는 고정관념을 LP를 소장할 수 있다는 재미있는 컬렉션 방법을 제시함으로써, 예술작품 수집에 대해 좀 더 편하게 생각할 수 있도록 했다. 그 첫 결과물인 백승우의 LP Jacket Edition은 작가의 초기작인 2000년
이번 아티스트 시리즈에는 LP Jacket Edition뿐만 아니라 백승우 작가의 다른 작품들도 만날 수 있다. 또한 백승우 작가의LP Jacket Edition을 재해석한 두 작가의 작품이 함께 설치될 예정이다. 이동욱 건축가는LP Jacket Edition에서 영감을 받은 구조물 작업을 선보일 것이며 강지혜 영상감독이 LP Jacket Edition를 바탕으로 만든 영상이 틀어질 예정이다.

백승우 소개:
2000년 중앙대학교 예술대학 사진학과를 졸업하고, 2005년 영국 미들섹스 대학교에서 순수미술과 이론을 전공했다. 개인전 《Blow up》(가나보브루 갤러리, 프랑스, 2006), 《Real World》(인사아트센터,서울, 2007), 일우 사진상 수상전 《Utopia/Blow up》(일우스페이스, 서울, 2010), 《판단의 보류》(아트선재센터, 서울, 2011), 《Memento》(두산갤러리 뉴욕, 미국, 2012), 《틈, 실현불가능한 일반화》(가나아트센터, 서울, 2012) 등을 열었다. 2010년 Dreamland (퐁피두 센터, 파리, 2010)을 비롯해 영국·독일·프랑스·일본에서 60여 차례 전시와 프로젝트에 참여했다. 2001년 제3회 사진 비평상 대상, 2009년 일우사진상을 수상했고, 2013년 일본 아트치요다 3331, 2014년 밴쿠버 비엔날레 레시던시 프로그램에 선정된 바 있다. 국립현대미술관, 아트선재센터, 금호미술관, 샌프란시스코 현대미술관, 휴스턴 미술관 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다. 작품집으로 『Blow up/Utopia』(이안북스, 2010), 『Memento』(이안북스, 2011) 등이 있다. 현실보다 비현실적 공간이 우리의 정체성에 물음을 던진다고 말하는 그는 계속해서 변형되고 조작된 현실의 이중성 혹은 현실과 가상을 혼합하고 대비시키는 작업을 통해 사진의 진정한 의미와 확장 가능성에 대해 탐구하고 있다.

Eloquence Magazine Artist Series:
For the third edition, Eloquence introduces photographer Seungwoo Back. This upcoming exhibition is co-curated by IANN, an art photography magazine. Since its birth, Eloquence has always supported and highlighted both Korean and overseas artists of many fields by introducing them on paper. Through its Artists Series, Eloquence would like to introduce you selected talents beyond the conventional white cube. After our first successful Artist Series with photographer Hasisi Park in December last year, we held a second solo exhibition with Olivier Zahm, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Purple Magazine.
Eloquence Artist Series 3: Seungwoo Back Solo Exhibition
For his solo exhibition, photographer Seungwoo Back introduces his brand new LP Jacket Edition to the public for the first time. LP Jacket Edition is a signed limited edition version of Back’s work in LP format. Back wants to give the public the opportunity to collect art pieces, even if it is sometimes considered to be inaccessible.
Showcasing his work in collectible format, the artist breaks the traditional stereotype of artwork. Hence, his work is a way for the public to connect with art in an easy and friendly way. Therefore, LP Jacket Edition consists of 10 series, chosen from his early work “In the Room” (2000) to his later work “Re-establishing Shot” (2011). The jacket design was reinterpreted by design studio BRUDER and they reinterpreted the name of the series as well. BRUDER was actively involved from planning to production, giving new meaning to the project.
The LP Jacket Edition box set consists of ten different artworks and is limited to a hundred sets. The attractive jacket and the original artwork inside give the public a new opportunity to appreciate his work from the past twelve years. For Artist Series 3, you can also view his other work apart from the LP Jacket Edition. An installation by architect Dongwook Lee and a video project by video director Jihye Kang will also be exhibited. Back’s LP Jacket Edition inspired both artworks.
Seungwoo Back Introduction
Seungwoo Back graduated from Chung-ang University with a major in Photography in 2000. Afterwards, he majored in Fine Art & Theory at Middelsex University in England in 2005. He had several solo exhibitions such as “Blow Up” (Galerie Gana Beaubourg, France, 2006), “Utopia/Blow” (Ilwoo Space, Seoul, 2010), “Deferred Judgement” (Artsonje Center, Seoul, 2011), “Memento” (Doosan Gallery, New York, U.S.A., 2012), “Break, Unrealistic Generalization” (Gana Art Center, Seoul, 2012) amongst others. He also participated in over 60 group exhibitions and projects in England, France, Germany and Japan including “Dreamland” at Centre Pompidou in Paris. He was awarded the “The 3rd Sajin Bipyong Awards,” in 2001, the Ilwoo Photography Award in 2009 and he was selected to participate the Japan Art Chiyoda 3331 in 2013 and Vancouver Biennale Residency Program in 2014. His artworks are in the permanent collections of National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Artsonje Center, Kumho Gallery, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Houston Gallery, etc. He also published two books “Blow Up/Utopia” and “Memento” published by IANN.
The artist considers that the space of unreality contemplates more our identity than the space of reality. Through his works, which show the duality of reality transformed and manipulated consecutively and the mixture and contrast of the reality and imagination, he continues to explore the genuine meaning of photography and its extensibility.
